SME is a participating body in the ABET organization. SME volunteers recruit, train and deploy professionals who visit colleges or universities that offer B.S. degrees in engineering fields such as, geological, geophysical, mining, minerals and environmental to ensure that the programs maintain the ABET accreditation.
SME has implemented this program to address the long-term challenges that threaten the sustainability of U.S. mining and mineral processing/extractive metallurgy academic degree granting programs, as well as the looming future labor deficiencies associated with retirements over the next two decades.
SME and the MEC worked with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to develop the Mining in Society merit badge in our ongoing efforts to help Scouts learn about the mining industry and its impact on their lives.
The Ernest K. Lehmann Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by the Ernest and Sarah Lehmann Family Fund of the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundations. The Lehmann Scholarship is awarded annually to one or more students pursuing an undergraduate degree in geology or geological sciences.

SME is the only organization in the United States that prepares examination questions for the licensure of mining and mineral processing engineers. Without this program, there would be no state certification for engineers in mining and mineral processing and, consequently, little incentive for college students to pursue careers in our industry.
The Ramani Graduate Students Award supports one or more outstanding graduate students pursuing an MS or a PhD degree in their thesis writing or traveling to the SME Annual Conference to present papers based on their thesis. Nominees must be enrolled in the graduate study program in mining, mineral processing, geological engineering or other similar engineering fields.
The Stantec/McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is awarded annually to up to six promising undergraduate students entering their junior year of an accredited undergraduate degree program in mining engineering with a focus on underground mining.
The primary objective is to promote the science of ground control by offering an undergraduate and/or graduate scholarship, or scholarships, that will be awarded annually to encourage the development of ground control engineers.
